Raise Your GrAPPtitude

Life is unpredictable.

It's about trial and error and it is laced with both good and bad chemistry. Living fully means testing boundarieslike the time you wanted to see if you could eat thirty White Castle burgers in five minutes. You cheered when you did it, but as Newton's Law states, for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Unfortunately, your joy and the joy of those who encouraged you to do it was short lived.

Caution: Some experiments may cause an explosion

I don't know everything, but there are three things I'm sure of:

1. Most people are addicted to their phones, computers, and/or social media
2. The loudest members of society are crazy oversensitive
3. Our level of gratitude is at an all time lowwe complain about everything

If White Castle doesn't get us first...

We're going to stunt our own development, stall progress, and eventually kill each other, leaving the cockroaches to feast on all of the wine and fast food we've left behind.

CHEERS! *clink*
Train them while they're young.

Let's take the teen who is punished and has his phone taken away from him. Because we are of the mindset that everything should be done in real-time and with the least amount of clicks and keystrokes, the grieving process has changed slightly. This teen will not go through seven stages of grief. Instead, he will go through several abbreviated stages of grief.

1. Denial and Anger - "You can't do this to me! It's my phone! I won't be able to get up on time or do my homework! What? I have no idea how to set the alarm clock, and there is no way you are getting me to use a pencil!"

2. Bargaining - "If you give me another chance, I won't run away. But if you don't, I swear I'm going to take off. If I don't have my phone, then Netflix, X-Box, meals cooked by mom, my own personal chauffeur, and a warm bed with a roof over my head mean nothing to me anyway..."

3. Noisy, Angry Acceptance - "Fine. Don't give me my phone. You all hate me anyway. My life sucks and this family is totally dysfunctional, but fine. Nothing goes right for me, so why should this be any different?" *slams door to bedroom where he stays, isolated, and in a teen induced coma until the punishment is over*

You can't escape your demons

He learns to sleep away his problems, still unable to form a sentence without a hashtag or emoji to get his point across. His anger at how unfair the world is never dissipates, and after he gets his phone back, he spends the next twenty minutes Instagramming and Snap Chatting unhappy selfiesso his friends can really feel his pain. Black and white filters and skeleton face apps are minions who join him on his mission to spread negativity.

I don't claim to have all of the answers.

But I do remember a time when gratitude was that feeling I got any time my brother hid the wooden spoon. Because of him, all disciplining would be postponed till my mom figured out where I stashed the belt. And that feeling of gratitude grew, because I knew that if she suspected either of us, we'd alibi for each other all day long. #FamilyBondingDoneOldSchool

No matter how we used to do it, I stand by my ability to ebb and flow with the times. I'm a problem solver. Plus, after a few drinks, some consider me creative.

One evening, I spiraled while I was surfing the internet. It was clear after reading just a few social media posts, that if negativity was a vaccine, no one would ever get sick again. Unfortunately, the reality is that negativity is a diseasea quick acting, contagious disease that spreads to the masses, like those viral videos of cats. Or people walking into glass doors.

My brain went right into grab that carafe and fix-it mode. Three cocktails later, I knew that GrAPPtitude was the answer.

It came to me when I realized that even though my insides were soaked with alcohol from at least three different countries, I was breathing, thinking, and typing away—I had no choice but to feel grateful because I was alive and functioning.

My kids were downstairs. My excitement was so overwhelming that I could barely hear their screams as they tortured one another.

I called out to them, "Stop licking each other's faces and shut the hell up! Mommy's working!" I was completely aware that the tingly feeling in my chest was not the vodka repeating on me. It was another round of appreciation. This time for my kids. They're such a blessing.

And out of miraculous epiphanies like these, GrAPPtitude was born. As I downed the last drop of liquid in my glass, I stopped myself from slipping into the abyss with everyone else. For I knew that eventually, one survivor would climb the stairs and appear. That child would be the one to get me a fresh bottle of booze and all would be right again.

In the zone

Lost in my positivity, I began to outline the terms of GrAPPtitude:

This app will use keywords to identify negative posts. Then your phone will physically shock you so that you stop typing. At that point, a message will be created, one that will be unique and appropriate to whatever you were trying to put out into the world.

For example:

You were going to complain publicly about no one liking your last Facebook post. Two words in, your phone reacts. After regaining feeling in your legs, Siri, or whatever you've named your phone voice yells:
"You feel ignored?! You want to talk about being ignored? Let's call your mother. I know you've forgotten her number, but I've got it right here!"

or

You start to tweet about how horrible your cramps are. You're sure that your first hashtag will be well received, but once you're able to bend your fingers again, the app screams:
"It's just your period! You think you know pain? That slipped disc in Aunt Jessie's back doesn't know what a day off is! Now click on the coupon for free chocolate and shut the hell up!"

Caution: Excessive Negativity Is Bad For Your Health

And so much more:

OMG it's Monday: "Are you complaining about having to put down the wine so you can go to the job that pays for your blackouts every weekend?"

I'm so broke. I never have money: "I'm sure that Netflix, your service provider, manicurist, and latte dealer will be very disappointed."

There are worse things than Starbucks taking the snowflakes off of their red holiday cups, or Christmas trees missing from the Santa backdrop at the mall.

When you consider what others gave up to give you the life you so freely complain about, stop to ponder where you'd be if George Washington had decided that he couldn't lead this nation because dentures really didn't reflect his brand. Or if he and his men felt it was only fair that they should be off on Christmas Day. And besides, it was just too cold to cross the Delaware River with no shoes on anyway....

#OMGICantFeelMyFeet

Tonight I will make a gratitude list before bed.

I'll make sure to include how grateful I am that I had three kids instead of only two. Someone's gotta get me the TV remote and paint my nails while the other two fix me something to eat....

10 Things ELF ON A SHELF Should Post On Social Media

 1. On Instagram: That face the woman who bought me makes when she bites into the half a cake she snuck into the laundry room. Sorry men. When it comes to cake, there's no #FakingIt.

2. On Linked In: Why you should congratulate Marny for being a great ELF ON A SHELF owner:

- I owe her one for hooking me up with Barbie three or four nights a week.
- Whenever I take a dump around the house or on her Christmas cookies, she squeals, "Let me grab
the camera!" instead of getting mad.
- And there's booze.

  3. On Facebook: It wasn't a windstorm that blew me right off of the shelf. Taco Bell needs to start posting warnings regarding teenage boys...

4. On Twitter: @MomOf4 That stuff you didn't scrape off the bottom of the coffee table before putting me there? It's exactly what you thought it was. #ElfProbs

5. On Tumblr: I saw Mommy trying out positions with ELF ON A SHELF #NewChristmasSongs #NaughtyList #SexyElf

6. On Facebook: The broken lamp was not my fault. I was set up.

7. On Twitter: @CrazyForCanines The dog you rescued is without a doubt not fixed. Maybe next time you won't put me so close to the dog's bed.

8. On Pinterest: Four More Uses For Your ELF ON A SHELF:

- Drinking Buddy - He prefers wine or beer
- Surrogate - Put him in several sexual positions so you can see which ones won't make you look like an injured elephant
- Audience Member - When you sing Taylor Swift songs at the top of your lungs while vacuuming
- Confidante - Strip down naked and ask him if you look fat. He'll smile at you as if you're hotter than Barbie and will not mention that your cellulite looks like the three bowls of mashed potatoes you inhaled last night.

9. On Facebook: Holy Crap! Why does the two year old keep putting me in the toilet and calling it a pool? Things just got real.

10. On Tumblr: New Christmas game. Every time the humans sing "Let It Go" Elsa and I will off another reindeer.

Seven Reasons Why The Grass Is Not Always Greener

If we women loved ourselves like we love shoes, chocolate, and hot guys who have lost the power to speak, life would be so much easier. It's the self talk that kills us. That little inner voice that whines, gripes, and has no obvious off switch can destroy our happiness - and sometimes an amazing orgasm.

There will always be haters out there, but the reality is that most people are huge fans or they are so wrapped up in themselves that our flaws don't even make their priority list. My mission today is to enlighten you about how little your shortcomings matter when our society has so many bigger things to worry about - like picking the right filter for selfies, computer screen glare, or staring at a full refrigerator while thinking, I never have anything good to eat!

While you're busy bad mouthing yourself, other people are usually thinking something totally different about you. They don't know your angst, don't care, and are lost in their own thoughts, totally oblivious to the fact that you are being held hostage by a voice who will never know the extreme pleasure-pain of a full on brain freeze:
You (looking in the mirror): "I'm so fat! My belly button is going to have me arrested for trying to choke it to death with my waistband!"
BF (looking at you from the sofa in between football plays): "My girl is so sexy. Look at that how those jeans hug her body...oh dang! That touchdown was nice!"

You (unable to brag on Facebook): "Who else wins $1,000 in a songwriting contest, only to have the president of the record company die before you get the prize?! Everything always happens to me!"
Your FB friends and frenemies: "If that bitch posts one more pic about a trip she took, or a freebie she got at some event, I'm going to punch her in her neck!"

You: I'm too busy and so overwhelmed! I just had to text a Happy Birthday to my Nana instead of leaving a voicemail!"
Nana: "Oh good. My granddaughter texted instead of calling. I was not going to pick up the call and miss another episode of Shark Tank, and I have no idea what the password to my voicemail is. Wait. What's with the birthday present emoji?? She'd better be getting me a real gift!"

You: "I have no friends."
Your Instagram followers: "How does someone Instagram their ingrown toenail and get 300 likes in ten minutes??"

You (on line at Starbucks): "Why is he looking at me? Did I sit in salsa again?"
Random Guy (on line at Starbucks): "She's so hot. But if I stop to talk to her, my wife's latte will get cold."

You: "I say such stupid things sometimes."
Anyone listening to you: "I love the way her lip curls when she says banana rotted underwear."

You (hearing the doorbell ring): "Oh my God. Mary's here and the house is a mess!"
Mary: "What is going on in here? That bitch is hiding the wine from me!"

My Hot Mess Is Your Hot Mess

Living Like A Hot Mess

When I was growing up in the seventies, the only hot messes I had to deal with were spilled soup, hot chocolate, or the landmines left by my dog in the backyard. There was no internet to expose us, so we suffered privately, in our closets, usually accompanied by beer, tissues, and Barry Manilow.
Clean up your own hot mess!

We were only found out if we drank too much at a beach campfire and started bawling - and even then, with only word of mouth to spread the gossip, the damaging info usually stayed within the confines of the town, and Danielle has herpes eventually morphed into Danielle burps a lot. (think Telephone Game)

Life was quiet back then and people minded their own dirty business - probably because without modern methods of finding and convicting killers, like DNA testing - loose lips could sink your own ship.

But then something happened that changed everything and my theory is that it showed up around the time of reality TV.

All of a sudden it was not only cool to tell your friends that you weren't wearing underwear, but also to show the world - just in case there was any doubt. And if that wasn't enough, when you missed an episode, a full recap, ripe with stills and video would be available on the internet. Of course nowadays, we can also catch encore airings, entertainment shows, and Netflix - the place where deceased programs rise up to live among us like zombies.

Drama Is King

It's drama that we're attracted to, and my attempts at being normal are not impressing anyone.

I finally figured out that I feel good when I organize my closet and give the clothes that I don't want to the needy. Raise your hand if you care.

Exactly.

Now, if I reveal that I'm a hoarder, and I'd rather have my house condemned than give up my water damaged books, then my name will come up in every conversation you have, till the obese guy down the block one-ups me by getting a crane to take him out of his house so he can go to food rehab.

Why Are Hot Messes So Appealing?

Boredom and feeling better about your own dysfunctions seem to be the top two reasons. When faced with the choice of talking about Miss Pauline's prized cherry tomato plants, or juicy topics like alcoholism, drug addiction, and mental illness, gossip seems to be the glue that holds the neighborhood together.

According to my friends' Facebook posts, if I've got a good story to tell, I can visit any time - as long as I bring wine, chocolate, and check my judgement at the door because my host will finish off the goodies I brought for sure. Whatever alcohol buzz or sugar high happens in the kitchen, stays in the kitchen.

Proud To Be A Hot Mess

In my family, the hot mess gene gets passed down to the younger generation with pride, like a secret recipe we won't share with anyone else.

Take my son for instance. Right now, I have him mostly under control, but one day he will move out and have to fend for himself. Max should not live on sugar, iced tea, and french fries alone.

I pray every day that the reaction he gives me when I offer him a carrot is the same response he has when offered drugs and alcohol. For now, I tell him that we're broke and that there is no money in the budget for chips, ice cream, or candy and that if he wants those things, he'll have to get a job. Wait, what? There's that face again. Is there a tomato in the room?

Fry Coma
Could I Be The Exception?

I think I'm a hot mess, but a lovable one. My biggest vice is that I crave intellectual stimulation and connections. If I'm not learning, I'm not living. Give me a new vocabulary word, a different perspective, or an unexplained paranormal event, and I will pump you up like Collagen without the lumpy, bumpy aftermath.

Peter Perfect and Susie Spectacular don't interest me unless they've got a terrific back story. You're thin, you've got oodles of money, and everyone adores you instead of me, so why should I like you? Because you were born with only four toes? I'm listening... Because you built a business from the back of your Volkswagon? Nice... Because when I find out what really makes you tick and what it's going to do for the world, I'm going to witness the magic of coincidence and get carried along in the awesomeness? Jackpot.

In the meantime, let's talk about your cousin with Aspergers...

WHAT'S YOUR STORY??...MEET CHAS

At the SUKI book launch, I was asked about where I get my characters/stories from. I answered, “I am the Taylor Swift of the literary world…if we experience it together, or if you tell me about it… you should now consider yourself warned.”

Everyone has a story, and everybody is interesting. I have a gift for digging that out. I will be compiling them here for your reading pleasure. As one SUKI fan put it, “…it’s unbelievable how you just never know what somebody has been through in life…” Believe me, you never know the impact your experience may have on someone else.

If you’d like to contribute your story, email me at: cfwinn@readsuki.com

—————————————————-0—————————————————-

Meet Chas:

Chas’ first official statement about telling his story here came in the form of a Tweet: “My story? I was born cold, naked, and hungry… from there, things got much worse :) HA”

Fortunately for us, Chas was willing to elaborate.

He grew up on a small farm in Georgia in the 1950's. His neighbors were miles away, so his playmates were his five siblings and cousins that would visit occasionally.

Who knew that Clyde, one of the cousins, would be instrumental in creating the author we know Chas to be today?

Chas described to me what went down on the family farm: "Clyde would always badger me to tell him a ghost story. He would challenge my creative skills by picking a normal every day object and expect it to be the 'haunted' item of the story I would make up. Once I remember him using a roll of toilet paper as the object, and I came up with a yarn that scared him so bad that he wouldn't use a toilet for weeks afterward.

His mom, of course, told my mom to stop me from doing that anymore which, of course, made me do it even worse with each opportunity. I grew more proficient in my fiction and my cousin's nightmares kept getting worse and worse as I honed my skills.

That is why today, I prefer writing mystery with a psychic twist rather than Stephen King styled out and out horror. My cousin still reads my stories but prefers the old blood and guts horror like I used to tell him when we were kids. Recently, I started a three book series called STRANGE SHORT TALES, in which I lean towards the short stories of supernatural things more in line with the tastes of my cousin."

Chas didn't start his career scaring the pants off of any other children though. He started in Electronics Engineering for the Department of Defense while, at the same time, he wrote for several military news prints and related papers. "It was all coats and tie type material, but I always found a way to sneak a wise crack in somewhere, and the readers seemed to love it."

Between 1996 and 2002 he worked for CNN and MSNBC as a Content Moderator. He passed the best quotes on to the TV producers or even to the reporters that were on the air. "I got to meet some awesome people, including Stephen King and Ted Turner. I became good friends with the Executive Producer of ABC's Nightline news program as well. My best moment on the job was when I talked (online via MSNBC) one on one to Tom Clancy for fifteen or twenty minutes. I discovered that he is a grumpy but very likeable person."

To read about his past and to engage in witty banter with him, you'd think Chas' life was pretty straight forward and basically happy... talented kid gets cool jobs, then further develops and eventually profits from his gift for storytelling...so, did he go on to live happily ever after?

Chas' story is far from over...

Find out the rest and meet Chas' demons at: http://www.readsuki.com/whats-your-story/
